Powers of Attorney

What are Powers of Attorney?

If you lose control over your ability to make decisions, you can nominate someone you can trust, who will act in your best interests – this means you have given them Powers of Attorney.

Depending on your circumstances you can consider:

  • Lasting Power of Attorney (the old living will) – which offers you peace of mind by planning ahead for a time when you may become incapable of making decisions and managing your own affairs.
  • General Power of Attorney – this can be for a set period of time or can cover a specific event, offering you convenience, for instance when you know you may be away or working abroad.

Knowing you have nominated someone to act responsibly on your behalf can provide a great sense of security.

If you don’t give someone this Power of Attorney, decisions can be made by the court – which is often time consuming, expensive and not always in your best interests.
